Registration Open for 10th Annual Great River Challenge Off-Road Triathlon

The Great River Challenge Off-Road Triathlon is not your average race. Instead of the usual swim, bike, run, athletes take on a paddle, trail run, and mountain bike adventure in the beautiful Upper Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts.

Hosted at the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center, the event highlights the region’s stunning natural resources—flowing Connecticut River access and miles of wooded trails—while raising funds for the Northfield Kiwanis Foundation. Proceeds support health, wellness, and youth programs for local children and families.

The Course:

  • Paddle: The race begins at the Quinnetukut boat launch with a 5.5-mile paddle up the Connecticut River, circling Clarke’s Island—also known as Kidd Island, rumored site of buried treasure from privateer Captain William Kidd.
  • Run: From the river, racers transition to a 4-mile trail run weaving through hills and valleys.
  • Bike: The challenge finishes with a 7-mile mountain bike ride on the Northfield Mountain trail system.

For newer athletes or those looking for a shorter day, a condensed version of the course follows the same layout. Whether racing solo or on a team, participants of all ages can expect professional timing, category prizes, and plenty of support from fellow athletes and spectators.

Now in its growing years, the Great River Challenge is more than a race—it’s a celebration of community, wellness, and outdoor adventure. By joining in, racers and supporters alike help strengthen a tradition that blends endurance sport with local history and a spirit of giving back.

There’s plenty of useful insight here, and it’s obvious that many members have real experience. I’m excited to learning more and eventually participating. I have lately been reading about this recently.
